for the creative souls

for the creative souls

We've all had an uncomfortable photography experience before.

Some photographers want to pose every moment and control everything to where you will miss out on the real moments (and you'll be pretty exhausted).

Other photographers become a fly on the wall which can be a source of lack of confidence.

I believe there's a balance to it.

I know when to step on the gas and when to let moments unfold.

And making of them should be just as great as the end result.

It should be fun, stress-free and enjoyable.

After shooting weddings for over 12+ years, I've worked with all types of couples from luxury weddings to destination weddings to intimate elopements and I've learned that I'm not for everyone.

On a wedding day, my skill is knowing when to step in and direct to tell you what to do.

A bride in a wedding dress surrounded by bridesmaids helping her with her dress in a bright, softly lit room.

During family formals, I'm not afraid to call out Aunt Charlotte that was busy getting another drink at the bar. During our portrait session, I have specific exercises that draw the best out of you so that you don’t have to worry if you’re gonna to feel weird, look weird or worry that you’re not being yourself.

And the other part of my style and the reason why couples love to work with me. Because I also know when to let your authentic moments unfold.

I recently photographed Anna and Dakota’s wedding and they told me:

"Katherine makes you fall in love all over again right there in front of her-which absolutely shows through in our pictures."

When you work with me, I bring a vision, creativity and I focus on getting you outside of your comfort zone so that you can live in the moment.

If you’re the kind of person that resists stepping out of your comfort zone and is a perfectionist about the details, we might not be the best fit. If you’re just price-shopping for a vendor, we might not be a good fit.

However if you’re the kind of person who values creativity, can trust me, then we’d be a great fit.

During our portrait session, I have specific exercises that draw the best out of you so that you don’t have to worry if you’re gonna to feel weird, look weird or worry that you’re not being yourself. Most photographers will pose you a certain way. However I have a very natural process that brings out the best out of you to where you not only look good but feel good during our session.

Almost every couple tells me that they don’t like having to pose for pictures. And I say, “Great! This won’t feel like posing at all.”  I want you to feel confident and sure of yourself on your wedding day. And I will lead you each step of the way.

We've been around the block a time or two. We know what it takes to make beautiful wedding photos. But we also know that the making of them should be just as great as the end result. It should be fun and it should be easy.

Katherine Joy Photography makes it both.

  • RAW (unedited) photos won't be delivered to you - you are hiring me for my editing style and trust that I will send you all the right images

  • I'm a pro-traveler for the last 13 years. I always have my hard drives backed up, passport updated and an expert in destination weddings. When you're in a place that you don’t know where you're at, I'm one familiar face that you can rely on.

  • Yes! The only photos that aren't delivered are the mid-blinking, blurry or unflattering photos I know you won't want to have. Sometimes I deliver over a thousand images. It just depends on how long we're hired and how much happens on your wedding day.

  • Yes! During our engagement session, we'll meet in person.

  • Being a destination wedding photographer, 75% of my weddings I photograph each year are new venues I’ve never photographed before. The reason you don't have to worry about me photographing at your wedding venue for the first time is because we are extremely educated in finding the BEST light to make you all look good in any and every location.

  • Yes. For weddings with over 150 guests, or want film photography as a priority, I highly recommend it!

A second photographer adds another perspective to the wedding and can ease the stress when there is a situation that requires me to be in two places at once. For example:

Getting ready (I cannot be at two places at once!): If the groomsmen are getting ready the same time the bridesmaids are, it's helpful to have a second photographer capture moments of them as well.

Ceremony: During the ceremony, the second photographer helps me capture the families reactions, the groom’s angle during the vows, and the sweet candid moments that happen so quickly while I focus on you both. The second photographer also helps capture cocktail hour as well while I capture family formals.

Candid moments: During family formals and bridal party portraits, there will endless moments happening between the families, guests and the second shooter's job is to capture the moments happening that I won't be able to catch.

I would recommend this if you want to get another perspective.

  • Yes I do. I am happy to send it over to your venue for proof as well.

  • After 300 weddings, nothing has happened to me yet. However I have a plan if something does happen to me. If something happens to me before the wedding, a trained associate will step in. If something happens to me after the wedding before your gallery is delivered, a trusted partner will access your wedding photos and and edit them in my style.

  • After your wedding, all of the photos will go through my backup system to prevent against any file loss. Multiple memory cards, physical hard drives, and digitally on the cloud. Your raw photos are saved for 6 months and you have access to the gallery for 18 months.
